February 2017

President’s Report

Preparations for the 2017 AMUG Conference in Chicago are nearly complete.  With four compelling keynote speakers followed by over 200 technical presentations and breakout sessions, you’ll be challenged to see it all. The AMUGexpo has nearly 100 exhibitors, and we have expanded the expo’s hours to give you more opportunities to discover new processes, services, and ancillary equipment. AMUG members know the conference is filled with hard work, balanced with plenty of fun, from Sunday through Thursday.

“For Users, By Users” is a concept that is best understood by attending the AMUG Conference. Nowhere else will you find a conference exclusively comprised of owners and operators of commercially-available additive manufacturing equipment that is used in professional applications. AMUG hosts the only conference where your AM experiences—shared with the experiences from other conference participants—and interactions with technical experts from equipment manufacturers advance the state-of-the-art for equipment and processes. You’ll find AMUG members to be inclusive and welcoming, while being very enthusiastic about their AM applications.  The practical knowledge you acquire from members and sponsors is unmatched.

We have posted several tools to allow you to plan your conference time carefully for maximum benefit. Take advantage of the online conference agenda to develop your strategy. When reviewing it, pay special attention since some of the sessions require pre-registration.  Use the online planner to assure your technical objectives are met. We will also be launching a conference mobile app to help you organize your time and keep you up-to-date with programming updates.

It’s up to you to make your AMUG Conference experience a success.  I look forward to meeting you in Chicago!

Conference Hotels

The demand for hotel rooms has been overwhelming. While that is yet another measure of the popularity of the AMUG Conference, it has led to some difficulties in getting reservations at both the Hilton Chicago (primary hotel) and the Palmer House Hilton (secondary hotel). To meet demand, Tom Sorovetz, event manager, has been working with both hotels to add additional rooms to the AMUG block at the $149/night rate.

With this in mind, Tom recommends that you first try to book a room at the Hilton Chicago. If there isn’t availability for the nights you need, then try the Palmer House Hilton. If that fails, reach out to Tom at eventmanager@am-ug.com, and he will do his best to secure accommodations. When contacting Tom, please inform him of your check-in and check-out dates.

  • Hilton Chicago reservations here.
  • Palmer House Hilton reservations here.

For those staying at the Palmer House Hilton, transportation to/from the conference hotel will be supplied (free), and the schedule will be posted at both hotels and in the conference program. Buses will also pick up from, and drop off at, the Palmer House Hilton for our Tuesday-night Awards Banquet.

Family Ties – Responses Needed

The response to our call for favorite family recipes has been a little light. Please consider sending yours to us to be considered as one of the items prepared by the hotel’s chef, and enjoyed by all conference attendees, for our Thursday-night meal. Please send the recipes, accompanied by a short description of what it is, why it is a favorite and whose recipe it is (e.g., grandma, uncle, mother).

For those with friends or family joining them in Chicago, we have outings set up for both Monday and Tuesday. To make the plans come together, we need accurate head counts. So if you are interested, please let us know.

Send the recipes and the friends/family outing information to Tom Sorovetz, event manager, at eventmanager@am-ug.com.

Stratasys

Smarter Prototyping

Ask a consumer product designer what her biggest job stressor is and she’ll probably say it’s achieving the best design with the limited time available. Consumer demand for more choices is increasing pressure on product developers to create new products, faster. Successful companies find ways to shrink their development cycle while unsuccessful ones go the way of the BlackBerry.

To meet that demand, Stratasys recently introduced the Stratasys F123 Series 3D Printers, the rapid prototyping (RP) system aimed squarely at helping designers and engineers consistently achieve the best design in the shortest amount of time. The Stratasys F123 Series helps designers iterate quickly, with economical, fast-printing PLA material, for concept verification. It lets engineers validate their designs and functionally test them using high-performance thermoplastics. And it does this with a simple workflow, made possible with GrabCAD Print software.

Check out the new professional RP platform, designed to make rapid prototyping more powerful and reliable, while simplifying the process. See it at the upcoming AMUG conference in Chicago or go to  Stratasys.com/F123.

The Stratasys F123 Series lets designers iterate more quickly to achieve the optimal design.
